Michael Caine’s aging magician “the Amazing Clarence” is losing his gifts. Sleight of hand doesn’t work so well when your hands (and memory) are shaky. So widower Clarence drives to an English retirement home, where time weighs heavily, even on the youngish couple (Anne-Marie Duff and David Morrissey) running the place. Their young son, Edward (Bill Milner), is so obsessed with death that he tapes last gasps of guests. In a set-up for life lessons, John Crowley’s (Boy A) film blends humor and heartbreak in Caine’s performance to make a small movie a richly satisfying one. Caine truly is magic. From P.
