In the much-lauded follow-up to his Academy Award-nominated City of God, Fernando Meirelles has crafted a riveting tale of conspiracy and mystery. Based on the best-selling novel by John Le Carré, The Constant Gardener seeks to unravel the complex motives behind the murder of a diplomat’s wife.

In a remote area of Northern Kenya, activist Tessa Quayle (Rachel Weisz, About a Boy) is found brutally murdered. Her companion, Dr. Arnold Bluhm (Hubert Koundé, How I Killed My Father), is nowhere to be found and comes under suspicion for the crime. The British High Commission in Nairobi mistakenly assumes that Tessa’s widower, the soft-spoken and unambitious Justin Quayle (Ralph Fiennes, The English Patient), will leave the matter to the authorities.

Distraught by remorse and openly shaken by the rumours of Tessa’s infidelities, Quayle embarks on a personal quest to learn the truth behind his wife’s murder. In a story that traverses three continents, Quayle risks his own life to expose what really happened and finds himself embroiled in a conspiracy more intricate and deadly than he could have ever imagined.

The script, co-written by Le Carré himself, is driven by the steady accumulation of tension and rigorous delineation of character that is the mark of great suspense cinema. The fusion of Meirelles’ cinematographic talent with the storytelling prowess of Le Carré will thrill both the eye and mind.
