After a painful heartbreak, Julie took off on a trip around the world where she dedicates herself to Third World kids, fair trade farmers and such. After five years she returns to Montréal where she crashes with her sister Jeanne, a shallow person who lies as she breathes. Julie finds herself entangled in the ‘game’ Jeanne plays with her fiancé Noël. Since their schedules don’t match, they communicate through messages they leave under magnets on their refrigerator. Jeanne is leaving for a week of adultery with theremin virtuoso Manu so she wants Julie to cover for her by responding to Noël’s fridge notes. Julie decides to get positive revenge by cranking up the romance in the notes she leaves. In an ironic twist Noël also has a friend, Michel, doing the magnet-dialogue for him. And what do you know, the two messengers end up falling in love. While the flirtation between Julie and Michel is the main attraction, the movie is actually an ensemble piece following five or six interconnecting romances. Les Aimants is not unlike Love Actually, but much more focused and inspired.
